A dog was bitten by a coyote near Dale Drive on Sunday, Oct. 15, police said. Following the attack, the coyote ran away into a wooded area. Animal control has been notified. Dogs were also bitten by a fox near Mountain Avenue and Larned Road on Monday, Oct. 16. Neither dog was injured and the fox is likely to be rabid, police said.

On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Summit Police Department said they had dispatched a fox they believe is involved in the recent dog attacks near Mountain Ave. and Tulip Street. It is being tested by animal control for rabies, police said.

Officers are warning residents to not leave dogs outside unattended, especially after dark. If you encounter a coyote, police advise people to make loud noises by yelling and waving arms to scare them off. To keep coyotes away from your home, police say to keep food and trash secure and keep hedges trimmed.

Animal control and the health department are working to trap the animals. Anyone who has an encounter with the animals should call the police non-emergency line at 908-273-0051.
